Charles Dickens visited Italy in 1844-45. He travelled with his family and he stayed in Rome during the Roman Carnival and again during the Holy Week

He also visited Pisa and wrote:'The moon was shining when we approached Pisa, and for a long time we could see, behind the wall, the leaning tower, all awry in the uncertain light'.
